Library Journal

Hurdle, an English teacher and avid mystery reader, provides most of the information a fan will need while visiting the England Christie lived in and wrote about. Stay at Brown's Hotel or Flemings, one of which was probably the model for the setting of At Bertram's Hotel. Shop where Agatha and her characters shopped (golf equipment at Lillywhites, chocolates from Charbonnel et Walker). Explore the Devon of her childhood and see the artifacts collected by her second husband, which are on display at the British Museum. Unfortunately, her many homes are in private hands. Most of the travel information Hurdle offers is standard fare, and information about hotels and restaurants is minimal, although she offers detailed seven- and 21-day itineraries for Christie's England. This guide is a pleasant read, but an optional supplement to Fodor's, Frommer's, or Eyewitness travel guides to England. Recommended for public libraries.--Linda M.
