Synopsis

Although the congregation is generally perceived as the locus of support for persons who have suffered the loss of someone dear, actually only 3 percent of congregations carry out grief ministry that extends beyond the first few weeks after a death.

Getting Through Grief provides a foundation for congregational-based ministry to those who are grieving. Contending that grief work is actually the responsibility of the congregation, Ronald H. Sunderland shows congregations how to and why they should set up teams who go through grief education and then carry out their mission in their congregation. The importance of ongoing grief support groups is stressed. Special attention is given to grief work with children and teenagers.
