Children's Literature
Gilbert the great white shark and his little pal Rita Remora get permission from his mom to play on the other side of the reef with the admonition not to go over the Edge. Gilbert soon tires of hide-and-seek and convinces Rita to go over the Edge into the inky blackness of the deep. He hides in a giant clamshell while Rita tries to find him. Suddenly he sees an eerie glow heading straight for his friend. The two shriek in terror only to discover that the green-eyed monster is an anglerfish named Glowanna. Recovering from their mutual fright, the three become tentative friends, promising to play again some day. Returning home by a different current, Gilbert and Rita are lost until discovered by Gilbert's worried mother, who scolds him for his disobedience but also gives him a big hug because he is safe. Cartoon-style illustrations reflect the blues and grays of the deep ocean with the coral reef in bright contrast. The gentle cautionary tale will be familiar to preschoolers who have experienced disobedience and forgiveness. Fans of the first Gilbert adventure Gilbert the Great and those who like Disney's Nemo will like this new adventure tinged with just a touch of the scary. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
