From The Critics

Here is an excellent source of information about glaciers for youth from ages 8-14 years; it will be a bit simple for older students. Not a textbook, the volume but can be used as a supplement or just a reference work. The material is accurate, with one exception: On page 9, it is stated that polar regions receive less sunlight than other regions. The truth is that every part of the earth, absent cloud cover, receives the same amount of sunlight during the course of one year. The polar regions are cold because of the large angle from the vertical with which the sun's rays hit. This idea is discussed correctly later on in the text. The photographs are outstanding, particularly those of the various glaciers. The photograph on page 18 might give people the idea that it is not unwise to get close to a large crevasse. In fact, it is unwise, but at least the picture shows a fixed rope that the ranger and other people are holding onto. A two-page glossary at the end defines the important terms. Also included are references to other books, addresses of Web sites, and an index. (a First Book.) Highly Recommended, Grades 3-8. REVIEWER: Robert E. Berges (Sierra Club)
