World trade and competition; innovation and growth; financial markets and globalization; and regulations, distribution, and the role of government were the four themes of a three-year research project launched in 1996 by the Center for Japan-US Business and Economic Studies. The 24 reports were presented at conferences in New York in March 1997, revised, presented at a January 1998 conference in Shimoda, Japan, and revised again before publication. The specific topics include whether world trade will soon cause an erosion of well- being in advanced countries, estimating biased technical progress, international adjustment under capital mobility, and the deregulation of the telephone industry.
