Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury

Created in a time when economic hardship was a reality in the United States, this modern wonder became one that pulled people together for a common cause. The history, planning, and construction of the bridge is discussed in detail in this book from the "Modern Wonders of the World" series. A map of the location is placed right up front to allow readers a sense of where they are in the world, and lush, full-color photos offer bird's-eye, direct, and worm's-eye views of the bridge and surrounding geographical area. Readers are treated to information in an educational, but easy-to-read manner. Facts and statistics are scattered throughout, and highlighted words such as "art deco," "bond," "currents," "main span," "New Deal," "strait," and more are defined in the text and in the glossary. Sidebars add interesting facts to most pages, and a concise page of facts posted at the back of the book offers a quick reference for fact-gathering. The entire book's visual layout is "flashy," and a fantastic double-page photo captures a breath-taking view. Many historical photos and illustrations are included in this book that can supplement various classroom subjects.

Gr 3-6-Each of these volumes examines the history of the landmark, providing background information about the region prior to and at the time of construction. The authors look at how the structures came to be, their monumental construction, and the public's reaction to them. A final section focuses on visiting the sites. "Quick Facts" further summarizes the statistical information. The excellent-quality photographs do a fine job of depicting the marvels and their surrounding areas. The maps and drawings enhance the texts by visually telling the story of these "modern wonders."-Christine Markley, Washington Elementary School, Barto, PA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
