The playful refrain "like this," makes Ginsgurg's simple story one children will love reading with their parents. A "little house, white and smooth" cracks open, revealing a plump yellow chick. His mother, Speckled Hen, takes good care of him by chasing away a troublesome cat and teaching him to peck in the dirt. Toddlers will identify with the chick when he tries to crow like the rooster, but all that comes out is a tiny "peep peep." Barton's sunny, childlike pictures enliven Ginsburg's tale.
