Overview

When day is done, it is time for Grandfather Twilight to close his book, put on his jacket, and go for a walk through the forest. All the woodland creatures watch in silence as he performs his very special evening task and returns to his house among the trees.

Here is Barbara Helen Berger's enormously popular classic--now in a board book format that retains all of the magic of the original. With its soft glowing illustrations, poetic text, and new reader-friendly size, the Grandfather Twilight Board Book is perfect for cuddling up with at bedtime

At the day's end, Grandfather Twilight walks in the forest to perform his evening task, bringing the miracle of night to the world.

Synopsis

Each evening Grandfather Twilight opens a chest, removes a pearl from a long string, and calls his dog for an evening stroll. As he walks, the sunset flows behind him like a beautiful robe, while in his hand the pearl grows larger. When he reaches the sea, he releases the pearl to the sky where it shines on the water below. Gentle and lulling, this book captures those serene moments that happen at twilight.

Children's Literature

One of the most calming nighttime books I ever read with my children makes a new appearance as a board book. Grandfather Twilight is an allegorical story of a grandfather who, nightly, takes one pearl from an everlasting strand and then goes for a walk. Everything quiets around him and the pearl growing larger with each step until he gently gives it "to the silence above the sea." There is tranquility in both Berger's verse and the soft mystical illustrations that make this a lullaby of a book. 2000, Philomel, Ages 1 to 4, $6.99. Reviewer: Susie Wilde

Children's Literature

The natural change of day into night is given a mystical treatment in this board book. Twilight is that time when the sky reflects the last soft rays of the sun and the surrounded woods and land becomes darker and indistinct. It is Grandfather Twilight who takes a pearl from his treasure chest and as it grows in size, he releases it in the sky where it becomes the moon. His job done, Grandfather Twilight retires for the night, just like little ones should. The allegory may be well beyond the comprehension of the intended listeners, but the soft illustrations and calm, short text will make a soothing read. 2000, Philomel,
