Editorials

From Barnes & Noble

This mass-market original novel marks the debut of not only a compelling new protagonist, but also a promising new author. Kalayna Price's first novel stars Alex Craft, an attractive private investigator and police consultant who happens to a grave witch. Her magical talents enable her to communicate with the dead and, indeed, with Death himself. In this case, however, her special powers don't prepare for vicious attacks from both sides of the grave. An auspicious beginning to two distinguished careers.

Publishers Weekly

Only a thin border separates the worlds of the living and the dead in Price's captivating series debut. Alex Craft is a penniless PI attached to two very high-profile cases: she's raising the first shade ever to take the witness stand and has discovered that the death of a local official involves magic. Nekros City police detective Falin Andrews wants her out of the latter investigation, which would suit Alex just fine if she hadn't been infected by a soul-sucking virus that only solving the case can cure. Add a little work freelancing for Death and a budding romance with Falin, and Alex is in way over her head. The world is nothing new, but a zippy pace and entrancing descriptions of "grave sight," which juxtaposes a decaying spirit world on top of ours, will keep readers happily turning pages. (Oct.)

VOYA

Alex Craft is a grave witch, a human with magical powers to see, speak with, and (to a limited degree) control the dead. She works as a private investigator and police consultant, gathering evidence from the dead. She enjoys a flirtation with Death himself, who is quite handsome despite his line of work. When the governor is killed, Alex is hired by her sister and estranged father (the lieutenant governor) to solve his murder. While using her "grave sight" to see the governor's memories, Alex is attacked and infected with a soul-consuming spell. She discovers that the governor may not have been murdered at all and is instead a megalomaniac stealing the bodies of others. As the spell takes hold, Alex's life depends on solving the mystery behind the governor and stopping him, teamed up with a new (and alarmingly handsome) detective, Falin Andrews. This is the first book in a projected series, and there is plenty of action and the promise of a developing love triangle to bring readers back for more of Alex Craft's adventures. At times, the plot does become somewhat muddied and hard to follow. The character development, particularly of Falin Andrews, is thin at times. For example, a bit of pixie brandy leads Alex and Falin to a very steamy chapter-long interlude that seems unsupported by the plot leading up to it. Despite these inconsistencies, this book should be enjoyed by both adults and older teen fans of paranormal mysteries and urban fantasy books. Reviewer: Sherrie Williams
