Gr 5-7-These titles offer chronological presentations of the series of discoveries that led to what is currently known about evolution, geology, and gravity. The authors are careful to label science that has been proven and that which is still considered theoretical, at least by some. In Evolution, creation stories from China, Greece, and the Old Testament are included. The work of early Greek, Roman, Chinese, and 19th- and 20th-century scientists is noted. The study of gravity begins with the early astronomers and proceeds through ancient thinkers, challenging the Christian church, Newton, Einstein, current thinking, and future studies. Unfortunately, the series format is overly busy with shaded boxes, circled terms, and multiple graphics on each spread that make it challenging to follow the main texts. The texts are even harder to read when the type is superimposed on graphic images. While the many brief profiles of scientists are interesting, there seem to be just too many disparate bits packed into these slim volumes to offer a cohesive overview of these topics.-Kathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn, OH Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.Book Details
