Overview

Revised edition of an eight-volume reference for middle and high school students that presents information on the lives, sports careers, and achievements of 1,058 outstanding competitors and champions in the world of sports up until the beginning of 2001. The alphabetically arranged profiles are approximately 1,000 words in length and, with a few exceptions, treat the life of a single invidiaul. They include basic biographical information, social milieu and other formative experiences; the course of their careers from the emerging stages through the rise to stardom; subsequent career tracks, i.e. how their achievements have inspired others, as well as their lives away from sports; and summaries that recapitulate the stories, paying special attention to awards and outstanding human qualities. Each is accompanied by a photograph of the individual, usually in action, and a table summarizing career statistics and milestones. Although coverage emphasizes sports popular in North America, space is also devoted to sports and athletes from around the world. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
