Mary Forbes - Children's Literature

The "Many Cultures, One World" series of books provides history and social studies students a wonderful preview of our fascinating world. In this case, Greece is explored with colorful photographs, intriguing facts, games and crafts that depict everyday city and country life. Children are given a rare opportunity to partake in special family customs by learning how to make Greek Easter eggs. They are also encouraged to try different foods such as tzatziki, with easily followed recipes. Each hardcover book comes with map, flag and historical references that are useful in classroom settings. The format of these books is written with Grades 2-3 in mind, and is an excellent source for early readers to use with larger type and shorter chapters. Additional information such as a word glossary and Internet reference sites are provided for further instructional research. Each book in this series supports learning for the National Center for History in the School and the National Council for the Social Studies. 2004, Blue Earth Books/Capstone Press, Ages 7 to 10.

School Library Journal

Gr 2-5-These basic overviews have abundant full-color photos and reproductions; large-print texts; a recipe, craft, and game; and a simple map of the country with only one or two labeled features. The inclusion of a legend or two from the country is a nice touch. Each book also includes a chapter on pets. The format is bright and attractive, but the practice of having the text running only on the verso, with pictures, special interest inserts, etc., on the right is a little hard to follow and seems to interrupt the narrative flow. Also, only one of the three recommended Web sites for Greece seemed appropriate for this audience. These serviceable titles are attractive, but the information is limited.-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
