School Library Journal

Gr 1-4-While a first glance at these slim, liberally illustrated guides may cause an oversimplification flag to rise in the heart of seasoned gardeners, the books do provide beginning readers with a surprising amount of solid information. Each book has nine chapters consisting of one to two pages of large-print text offering basic facts and instruction. Subjects include choosing what, where, and how to plant; using a hardiness-zone map; weeding; watering; and other facts of special importance. Attractive color photographs, helpful drawings, and sidebars appear throughout these titles. This series is preferable to the minimal and confusing texts of the similarly formatted "Digging in the Dirt" series (Rosen).-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
