Synopsis
George Whitehead, for many years a regular and successful exhibitor at horticultural shows and frequently a judge, knows every aspect of his subject and is better qualified than most to advise exhibitors on how to turn their ordinary well-cultivated vegetables, fruit and flowers into prize-winning entries, having given them, as he explains, that extra fillip that leads to success. Special emphasis is placed on the all-important matter of presentation and display which enables a competitor to show the entries to their very best advantage. Attention is focused mainly on the annual August shows but entries for other seasonal shows are discussed where appropriate. The author does not attempt here to teach basic methods of cultivation, for such information is widely available elsewhere an appendix on Garden Literature directs readers to helpful books, pamphlets and catalogues but rather concentrates on passing on all the techniques and tricks of the trade that he knows, from his lengthy personal experience, will help to win the day.
The text is augmented by Anne Shingleton's clear and practical line drawings.
