Description:In its third edition, this book continues to be a highly informative authority detailing all aspects of pulmonary rehabilitation and program management. It updates the 1998 edition.
Purpose:The book is written to provide a scientific and practical framework regarding optimal delivery of pulmonary rehabilitation to people with symptomatic pulmonary disease. It also offers pulmonary rehabilitation practitioners understanding of the theory of pulmonary rehabilitation and insight to the AACVPR program's guidelines and credentialing process. This revision meets these objectives.
Audience:Although written primarily for healthcare professionals, the book proves to be valuable for respiratory therapy and medical students as well. The Writing Committee of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) who jointly authored this revision are experts in their respective fields of expertise.
Features:This latest edition addresses the essential components of pulmonary rehabilitation, including patient assessment and selection criteria, patient education and training, exercise, psychosocial interventions, patient outcomes and prevention. The book also stresses the importance of early screening and detection for lung disease and the need to tailor rehabilitation services to each patient's particular needs. Use of two color graphics plus black-and-white pictures reinforce the information. The appendixes supply examples of forms, questionnaires, assessments, pulmonary rehab programs and a pulmonary rehab facility, plus guidelines for clinical competency and the Six-Minute Walk test. The exhaustive list of resources (nearly 600) are combined in the back of the book for reader investigation.
Assessment:This book is outstanding. Not only does it provide the essentials to create or update a pulmonary rehabilitation program, it also provides the tools necessary for pulmonary rehabilitation practitioners. In addition, the guidelines would be a valuable reference in any pulmonary rehabilitation policy and procedure manual.
