School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Two interesting titles with inviting covers. Woods visited the Martin Guitar Company and New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc. in order to learn about and document the manufacturing processes. Technical terms are used and defined in the text as well as listed in a brief glossary. Both books are liberally illustrated with several color photos per page. Though some of the pictures are obviously staged, they do a nice job of documenting the various steps required to manufacture the items. Many of the captions merely reiterate the text. Guitars includes photos of several famous musicians such as Eric Clapton and Paul Simon, who have their own line of limited edition guitars in Martin's "Signature Series." Sneakers may be a little confusing for children unfamiliar with the names of the various parts of the shoe, though parenthetical explanations such as "vamp (top of shoe)" help to clarify uncertainties. The format is pleasing to the eye and easy to follow. While these are not high priority purchases, they will enrich any collection.-Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|Book Details
