Overview
"This book is written by Barbara Bain, a leading haematologist with a reputation for her educational prowess in the field. It provides a concise overview of the haemoglobinopathies and focuses on the selection, performance, and interpretation of relevant laboratory tests. The tests dealt with are mainly those done regularly in diagnostic haemotology laboratories. Where more specialist tests are required, the reader is given an overview of what the specialist centre will do, with guidance on what the result will imply." This book is extremely practical in orientation and is an essential reference volume in the general haemotology laboratory.Synopsis

Description:This is a comprehensive text covering clinical and laboratory aspects of hemoglobinopathies.
Purpose:The author intended this to serve as a practical book on the laboratory diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies. This is a worthy goal, given the complexity of laboratory diagnostic techniques and the explosion of molecular diagnostic tests in this field. The author has succeeded admirably in meeting her objective.
Audience:The author does not specify an audience for this book. In my opinion, it would be useful for individuals at all levels who are interested in hemoglobinopathies, from the clinical laboratory scientist in training to the experienced and practicing pathologist, laboratory medicine practitioner, hematopathologist, and hematologist. The author is an internationally famous authority in this field and brings years of experience and perspective to this book.
Features:This book covers all aspects of hemoglobinopathies, from the basics of control of hemoglobin synthesis to clinical syndromes associated with hemoglobinopathies and laboratory techniques used to identify exact molecular defects. The book is printed on glossy paper, allowing wonderful reproduction of the illustrations. The color pictures, illustrations, and figures are truly "worth a thousand words." There are pictures of patients exemplifying prominent disease-associated features, photomicrographs of pathognomonic RBC morphologic abnormalities, and numerous photographs of electrophoretic modalities (isoelectric focusing, cellulose acetate and citrate agar gels), HPLC separation patterns, and molecular diagnostic tests (Southern blots, dot blots, RFLPs, PCRs, etc.). The final chapter consists of a set of test cases for the reader to test his/her knowledge and is replete with real world laboratory and clinical evidence from which the reader should be able to make a diagnosis.
Assessment:This book is an outstanding contribution to this field. The author is to be commended for successfully compiling a vast amount of information into a relatively concise yet extraordinarily resourceful and physically beautiful book. This book should be a mainstay for the bookshelf of anyone remotely interested in this subject. I know I'll have to place it under lock and key so that it won't "wander" into the offices of my colleagues or staff.

Addressing the cause of most errors in the diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies, Bain (hematology, Imperial College School of Medicine) provides an overview of these conditions with a focus on the selection, performance, and interpretation of the results of tests that should be offered by all but the very specialist referral centers. She also discusses what specialists centers will do if more tests are required, with guidance on what the results will imply. Contains many b&w and color illustrations and charts. Annotation c.
