Overview
While the concept of 'soft power' is destined to characterize the future of transatlantic relations into the 21st century, countries such as the United States have been low to exploit this approach during the Bush administrations. The Europeans by contrast have developed more sophisticated 'soft power' resources through their internal processes of integration, and are deploy them with increasing effectiveness in their relations with other nations.Dimensions that have affected this contrasting position are discussed in this volume. Contributions from a range of leading international commentators consider the notion that this relationship will pose continuing international and domestic security problems, alongside the impact on economic, social and cultural relations. While the United States and Europe will remain active and important partners in global affairs, this diverging approach and complex relationship will not be without its friction.
