Linda Lee

In the past, Dr. Cook's novels have been capable of inspiring a pleasant level of reader anxiety. ''Harmful Intent,'' however, induces only mirth with occasional bouts of nystagmus, a rotary motion of the eyes that results from trying to follow a sequence of objects rapidly passing by. In ''Harmful Intent'' no character achieves even the lifelike animation of a robot....How ghastly is the book? The conclusion involves a bursting bag of decomposed entrails used successfully as a weapon. Which leaves us with the real question this book elicits: is there such a thing as malpractice insurance for writers, and if so, what would Robin Cook's premiums be? -- New York Times
