Children's Literature

Lynette Jennings has her own design show on the Discovery Channel, and uses this book to help teen girls create and have fun decorating their own room. First, there is a letter of support and encouragement for parents. Using a brief questionnaire, readers can identify their style including funky chick, flower power, nature girl and teddy bears. The 28 projects are divided into these categories. Included in each project are a supply list, step-by-step instructions and a colorful illustration of the project. Most projects do not require power tools and other than screws or nails and some window hardware everything is accessory-oriented. From funky painting to feminine hearts and flowers to a butterfly bulletin board, girls will enjoy using their unique personality to decorate their own space. The low cost projects are fun with easy-to-read directions that will help bring out the creativity in any teenage girl. The book includes photographs of room interiors and details and step-by-step project instructions by Lisa Sciascia. 2001. Aladdin, $12.00. Ages 11 to 16. Reviewer: Michele Wilbur

School Library Journal

Gr 6-10-Beginning with an introduction to encourage teen girls to figure out what kind of personality they have, the author then describes four very different, attractive ways they might want to decorate their bedrooms. The suggestions are divided into four sections: "Flower Power," "Teddy Bears," "Funky Chick," and "Nature Girl." Each chapter includes wall, window, headboard, and bulletin-board ideas as well as other decorations around those themes. Checklists tell what is needed for each thematic decor and clear descriptions and color photographs for each step are provided. The author states that all projects could be financed by a baby-sitter's wages, with parental approval, but none need much, if any, adult help.-Cathie Reed, The Montessori School, Lutherville, MD Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
