Overview

This is the third volume in the acclaimed series on head and neck surgical procedures.

Each step-by-step presentation is preceded by a description of indications, diagnostic methods, preoperative procedures, and type of anesthesia. Important modifications and alternative techniques are presented; surgical landmarks and sites where injury could occur are fully detailed. Rules, hints and typical errors are given at the end of each procedure.

Each section closes with a discussion of postoperative care and the functional sequelae of the surgery. The collection, compiled with an acute awareness of the interdisciplinary nature of this area, is invaluable when preparing for surgery.

The book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations.

Jose Dutra

This is an excellent and well illustrated surgical atlas that incorporates old and conservative surgical techniques along with new procedures and technological innovations. This second edition was published 20 years after the first German edition. The ""fundamental goal"" is to provide otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons with detailed, up-to-date information on the current status of specific operative techniques in the field. Several international, well known contributors of different fields of expertise provide unique perspectives and insights. Only a few otolaryngologists are not familiar with the previous publications of the editors and contributors. This book targets otolaryngologists and head and neck surgeons at all levels. It is also an valuable resource for general surgeons and other specialists who operate in the neck. This is a well-organized text covering large amounts of information on neck surgery and endoscopy. The focus is on relatively well established techniques, meant to describe selective surgical procedures based on the author's own experience or preference. There are some remarkable illustrations detailing the surgical techniques and the anatomical relationships. The chapters on endoscopic techniques and procedures is comprehensive, well written, and very well illustrated. The chapter on mediastinal dissection and cervical lymphatic surgery also provides an excellent technical description which is accompanied by detailed illustrations. In the chapter of neck reconstruction, the contributors describe a range of local and regional flaps with little emphasis on the application of microvascular reconstruction. Local and regional flaps, however, are stilluseful when microvascular reconstruction is not available or not the most appropriate choice. This is an interesting and very informative book which describes most of the current neck surgical procedures. It is a good technical manual, well-organized with clear and detailed illustrations. However it does not really add much to what is already available in other previous publications. Nevertheless, it does deserve a place in any surgical departmental library.

This book represents one volume out of three in a well-respected series of otology surgical atlases. This particular volume is a second edition and is dedicated to otologic and neurotologic surgery. This multiauthored text is written by well-respected individuals in this field. The purpose is to provide detailed and up-to-date information on the current status of otologic surgery. The new volume provides updated information on some newer procedures in the field. This book is also intended to complement the other two volumes in this series to provide a complete surgical atlas for almost all the known otolaryngology procedures. The book is primarily intended for active practitioners in the field of otolaryngology. This book could also serve as a reference for residents in otolaryngology. This book features comprehensive coverage of otologic procedures. Each procedure is clearly described with good illustrations. The description of the procedure also includes a detailed discussion of the evaluation of the problem, the indications and contraindications for surgery, possible early and late complications, and outcome information. Each section also contains a complete and up-to-date reference list. This is a great addition to the field of otolaryngology, specifically the subspecialty of otology/neurotology. It provides a comprehensive listing of surgical procedures of the ear and skull base. The description includes a concise discussion of the procedures and evaluation for each problem. Indications and complications for each procedure are also discussed. The illustrations are not flashy, but adequate for this type of text. Each section contains an appropriate reference list.Although this atlas does a great job in describing otologic procedures, it does not cover some of the more accepted modifications to these procedures such as the use of a laser in ear surgery. Overall, this is an excellent atlas. It is worthy of a new edition. The authors did an outstanding job in meeting their objectives for this text.
