Overview

"Head, neck, and dental emergencies provides the reader with a working approach to the diagnosis and management of patients in casualty. The book covers how to diagnose and manage all urgent or emergent problems that occur above the collar bones. Emergency care must be simple and quick so this book comprises short notes, diagrams, and photographs, with an emphasis on establishing the diagnosis while maintaining a high index of suspicion. Where possible, the book covers one topic per one to three pages and uses a system of four icons to allow rapid identification of the degree of urgency of each condition presented." Aimed primarily at undergraduate dentistry students, this book will also be relevant for junior doctors and nurses in accident and emergency medicine, maxillofacial surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, anaesthetics, and plastic surgery.

Editorials

Reviewer: Emad W Estafanous, BDS(University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This book offers a clear, concise explanation of emergency conditions that may arise in the head and neck area. It provides a ready reference for these conditions and offers appropriate treatment regimens. In general, this manual serves as a handy reference to complications and emergencies that can arise in the dental patient.
Purpose: The purpose is to identify and outline the management of those diseases, injuries or complaints which occur in the head and neck region; it is aimed primarily at health professionals or undergraduate students who are still inexperienced in emergencies. This handbook will give them invaluable guidelines to deal with these types of urgent medical health situations.
Audience: The audience includes health professionals or undergraduate physicians in accident and emergency medicine, anesthesia, neurosurgery, maxillofacial surgery, ENT, ophthalmology and general plastic surgery as well as surgical trainees and medical and dental students.
Features: "This well illustrated book provides a good coding system for each topic to provide a guide for the reader to distinguish true emergencies from conditions that simply need urgent care. The addition of basic anatomy for each organ, however, is a distraction since the book is meant to be a quick reference. In addition, the treatment lacks the exact dose, frequency, duration of the medicines prescribed and the protocols for their application. It also lacks alternative options and medications to be used in the case of an allergy to specific types of drugs, e.g. Penicillin. There are no references. "
Assessment: "This book offers a clear, concise explanation of emergency conditions that may arise in the head and neck area. It provides a ready reference for these conditions and offers appropriate treatment regimens. In general, this manual serves as a handy reference for complications and emergencies that can arise in the dental patient. "
