From The Critics

Reviewer: Daniel S Rubin, M.D.(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This is a handbook on the perioperative and critical care of neurosurgical patients.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick reference for all healthcare professionals who care for neurosurgical patients, in both the perioperative and critical care setting. There is a need for a book like this, but this one does not meet the criteria for a quick reference and is marked by omissions that limit its utility.
Audience: Although written for a broad audience, from students to attending physicians, it is most appropriate for nurses and beginning residents.
Features: The book is wide ranging, covering neurophysiology to the entire perioperative period and expected complications for each type of procedure. It highlights the pertinent complications that may arise during certain procedures. The problem is that it falls somewhere between a quick reference and a comprehensive textbook, and it doesn't accomplish the goal of either. A quick reference should be smaller, more portable (especially in the age of tablet devices), and use more of a bullet point format. A textbook should have references, longer explanations for conditions, and more detail.
Assessment: This will be a useful guide for nurses, medical students, and beginning residents but it falls short of being a reference for more experienced practitioners. The size of the book also limits its portability and utility.
