Children's Literature

An important topic for all children to be familiar with is that of health, which happens to be the focus of this book in the "Everyday Science" series. The book opens by recommending that people need to "eat and drink a variety of healthy foods," "stay clean," "exercise," and "sleep" in order to maintain a healthy and happy life. Children learn which foods give us energy, keep us healthy and help us grow. Readers are asked what kinds of foods they can use to create a healthy meal. A discussion of how to stay clean is followed by a section about exercising. The book also talks about what to do when feeling sick, and about the importance of sleep. Each section of the books is filled with colorful photographs, interesting information and thoughtful questions. The pages are visually appealing in their design and in their use of color. The author provides the readers with websites, books and the names of other resources where they can learn more about this topic. The print is large and suitable for early readers. This text can easily be incorporated into content area lessons as well as language arts lessons. 2004, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 6 to 8.
