Children's Literature

This very informative nonfiction book thoroughly explains the concept of hearing in an easy-to-understand format. The presentation of material follows a logical sequence starting with an explanation of sound production. The parts of the ear and their functions are described and appropriate photographs and labeled diagrams are included. The book includes a table of contents, glossary, index, and captions that enhance the usefulness of the text in an educational setting. Another nice feature is the bibliography of related print, electronic, and organizational resources for further study. This book is a welcome resource for use with an elementary science unit on the human body. Other "True Books" relating to health and the human body include The Circulatory System, The Nervous System, The Digestive System, The Respiratory System, Sight, Taste, Touch, and Smell. 2003, Children's Press/A True Book, Ages 7 to 11.

Gr 2-4-Each large-print text discusses the organ or body part responsible for its sense, how the brain reacts to sensory receptors, and ways of maintaining sensory health. Each book has a fact page of trivia about its respective sense. Clear diagrams, close-up photographs of children, and magnified images illustrate these titles. Given the amount of unfamiliar terminology in each book, it is unfortunate that there are no pronunciation guides. Nonetheless, these are well-written, accurate, and readable choices.-Pamela K.
