Documenting an exhibition organized by the Kunsthalle D sseldorf and the Tate Gallery Liverpool, this catalog provides a quick survey of some of the latest trends in the international art scene. Works from 35 artists highlight some of the strengths and too many of the weaknesses of art in the 1990s. Ostensibly built around the theme of religion in contemporary society, the catalog is interspersed with essays on the meaning of religion by Thierry de Duve, Samuel R. Delaney, and others. Too often these disappoint. Much more interesting are the too brief comments on the artists and their work. Though much of the work is interesting (such as the kitschy but effective efforts of Yinka Shonibare or the shimmering crystal gowns of Justen Ladda), too much of it is familiar (the increasingly tired work of Jeff Koons or Gilbert & George). Recommended only for large collections of contemporary art.--Martin R. Kalfatovic, Smithsonian Inst. Libs., Washington, DC Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.\Book Details
