The Barnes & Noble ReviewAfter a decade of starring in award-winning graphic novels, Mike Mignola's Hellboy -- the giant half demon turned paranormal investigator -- hit the big screen in 2004. In this novelization of the Guillermo del Toro film by Yvonne Navarro, Hellboy and his allies must battle the Nazi villains who brought the big red guy to Earth 60 years earlier in a failed attempt to bring about the end of the world.
Now as the top field agent of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, a clandestine branch of the FBI, Hellboy's job mandate is relatively simple: Track down and eradicate supernatural beings. Vampires, werewolves, hellish ghouls -- so far nothing has been able to best the 6'9" horned giant with a stone fist (the Right Hand of Doom) and a multipurpose, handheld cannon affectionately named the Good Samaritan. But when Dr. Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholm -- Hellboy's foster father and the man who lovingly raised him from an infant -- is killed by the same villainous group who brought the half demon to earth decades earlier, Hellboy vows to kill the Nazi sorcerers once and for all and end their nefarious plan to bring Armageddon to Earth. Standing in Hellboy's way is a nightmarish hellhound that is seemingly impossible to kill. And to complicate matters further, the Nazis have the love of Hellboy's life, a beautiful pyrokinetic named Liz.
As haunting as it is hilarious, this fast-paced novelization will undoubtedly spur science fiction fans to search out the numerous graphic novels and find out more about the lovable, butt-kicking, demonic hero. Paul Goat Allen
