The Barnes & Noble Review
Hello Kitty first emerged on the social scene in 1974. But this dynamic diva didn't fade into the disco light of the '70s. The fancy feline proved massively popular through the indulgent '80s, riott-grrl '90s, and into the new millennium. This much-loved hipster has legions of fans all over the world who delight in the grand assortment of Hello Kitty collectibles. From toothbrushes to tote bags, her precious mug appears everywhere. This lush volume chronicles the kitty's rise to stardom and the many collectibles that celebrate her dedication to sass and fun.

From the very start, Hello Kitty (her proper name is Kitty White) was created as a best friend for everyone. First and foremost, her goal is to be a fabulous girlfriend. The book details her cast of friends and family, from her sister, Mimmy, her boyfriend, Daniel, and friends like Tippy, Thomas, and Fifi. This charming book sorts the collectibles according to theme, including "Kitty Keepsakes," which highlights some of the first products to bear her image. The coin purse was first, followed by an adorable plush, a funky alarm clock, and a handkerchief.

School supplies have always been a "staple" in the Hello Kitty line. Her precious face has adorned many notebooks, pencil sharpeners, and rulers. But who knew there was a Hello Kitty watch encrusted with 34 diamonds? This $30,000 collectible is definitely for a hard-core fan. Other over-the-top but just as cute items -- include a Hello Kitty washing machine, vacuum cleaner, and popcorn vending machine.

In many circles, Hello Kitty has also been deemed a fashionista, always sporting the hippest of clothes, and sometimes creating new trends. Bags, purses, and pearl earings are all featured in the "Kitty Γ la mode" chapter. From casual totes to velvet handbags, this cat is an inspiration. And let's not forget the plush. The evolution from the standard jumpsuit to Angel Kitty in 2000, with a blue dress and a ring of flowers in her hair, reveals this feline's penchant for reinvention. This expansive volume follows Kitty through to the modern age with Kitty cordless phones, laptops, and, yes, even a wedding. If they drop in at Sanrio's Puroland in Japan, couples can have a Hello KittyΒ–style wedding.

A best friend, true and sweet, Hello Kitty is sure to bewitch a whole new set of young fans in the future. No one can resist that sweet face, the hidden smile, and the twinkle in her eye. After reading this collection, fans will be chanting "Hello Kitty Forever." (Amy Barkat)

Children's Literature

Hello Kitty is a cartoon character that has recently turned 25 years old. To celebrate, this book highlights Hello Kitty's history from her humble beginnings as a few rough sketches, to her reemergence as a classic and collectable enigma. The red bow tie in her hair and her expressionless face are recognized around the world. Originally intended only to decorate a coin purse, Hello Kitty has grown in popularity. Today her image appears on everything from pens and notebooks to diamond jewelry and automobiles. She even has her own theme park. The first few chapters provide a narrative history of Hello Kitty and the balance of the book is photos and descriptions of the abundant Hello Kitty merchandise. Children may enjoy learning about this beloved character's beginnings, but will probably just flip through the remainder of the book. The photos are colorful and captivating, but the later part of the book lacks content. 2001, Harry N. Abrams, $17.95. Ages 8 up. Reviewer: Denise Daley
