Three very short tales are used as examples of when to say "hello." Everyone likes to be greeted and to be made welcome. It's always courteous to say "hello" in return. Boldfaced discussion questions can help reinforce this understanding with little listeners and readers. Part of the "Courteous Kids" series. 2001, Gareth Stevens Publishing, $14.95. Ages 3 to 8. The short book, Hello will help young children think about how their actions affect others. It is a windy day and young David and his father are walking to the park to fly a kite. A passing neighbor stops to say "hello" and David does not respond. The story asks the reader to consider how the neighbor must feel when his friendly greeting is ignored. David thinks this question over and cheerfully yells "hello" when they pass the same neighbor on their way back from the park. Diverse characters are portrayed in these sensitive and thought provoking stories, which aim to teach kids how to show respect and good manners. This book is part of the "Courteous Kids" series. 2001 (orig. 1999), Gareth Stevens, . Ages 3 up. Reviewer: Denise DaleyBook Details
