Born near Detroit, Michigan, where he grew up on a farm with his five siblings, Henry began attending his one room school at age seven. Mary, his mother, was known to be the disciplinarian in the household until she died when Henry was twelve. Inside the classroom Henry excelled in math; outside his interests lay in mechanics. He received a watch for his 13th birthday and his neighbor had a wagon powered by a steam engine. These are just a few events that helped encourage and inspire Henry's interest in machines, motivating him to move to Detroit when he was sixteen. As he grew older and married, Henry continued searching for ways to make farm life easier. In 1896 he completed his first vehicle named the quadricycle.
