In six short episodes, Pearce paints an affectionate portrait of Tod, his extended family, his friends, and his neighbors. There may be some initial confusion about the intended audience for this short novel. Tod seems a bit young to immediately capture the interest of the beginning chapter book reader for whom the book seems ideally suited. But readers and listeners of all ages will be charmed once they get to know Tod, the boy who appreciates the miracle of orange seeds and who loves his Granny almost as much as his Teddy.
