School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-Whiting and Garcia provide details of de Soto's life, including the exploration of Nicaragua, campaigning in Peru with Francisco Pizarro, and appointment as the governor of Cuba. Whiting documents Ponce de Le-n's life beginning with the explorer's voyage on Columbus's second expedition to the New World, his search for the fountain of youth, his expeditions to Florida, etc. Both titles have short chapters, and color photographs and reproductions. A publisher's note states that "-parts of the text might have been created by the authors based on their research to illustrate what might have happened years ago, and is solely an aid to readability for young adults." These books provide basic information for reports, and the author's writing style might appeal to reluctant readers.-Shauna Yusko, King County Library System, Bellevue, WA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
