VOYA - Susan Allen

Hexbound starts up right where the first book of the Dark Elite series, Firespell (Signet, 2010), ends. The reader does not have to have read Firespell, however, to become immersed in Hexbound. Students called Adepts, using various magical powers to fight evil, lead the reader into an alternate world that exists mainly beneath Chicagoβ€”under the city. Jason, Michael, Scout, and Lily, part of the Adepts third enclave, come across strange, slimy mutants while patrolling the tunnels one night. The enclave is understandably confused by these weirdoes and they team up with a few girls from a neighboring enclave to solve the mystery. Lily, the main character, is adjusting to her new magical powers that appeared during the events in Firespell, as well as wrestling with other issues. She continues to question her parents and what they are really up to. Sebastian, a Reaper, one of the "bad" types in the alternate world, is making an effort to connect with Lily. She is wary of him and she does not trust him, but... The alternate world is so well done that the reader easily becomes immersed in it and the adventures of magic-wielding teenagers. All the relationships are well-written, but Scout and Lily have a quirky dynamic that is wonderful. The characters are likable, believable, and fun. The plot is not predictable. The action is continuous. Fans of the Morganville Vampire series will enjoy this series as well, but so will so many others. It is a delightful read. Reviewer: Susan Allen
