School Library Journal

Gr 7 UpThese two fast-paced overviews present vital topics for YAs. The key concepts are introduced, their values to both individuals and society are explained, and concrete examples of each principle in action are shared. For instance, Gartner presents scenarios that involve Teamwork at home, in school, and at work. He adds an especially significant and appealing chapter devoted to the four stages of team dynamics: forming, storming, norming, and performing. Similarly, after explaining the necessity and inherent worth of Self-Management in successful, satisfying lives, Santamaria shows how the principle can be developed at school, in the work place, in extra-curricular athletic pursuit, and in volunteer activities. In addition to the introductions and summaries found in the separate chapters on each book, pertinent "Questions to Ask Yourself" appear at the end of each chapter. The full-color and black-and-white photographs lack a sharp, professional look, but do not significantly detract from the easy-to-read presentations.Jerry D. Flack, University of Colorado
