While packed with engaging information, this reference suffers from a conspicuous lack of illustrations. Besides a line drawing of the Nile Valley and a largely uncontextualized segment of 15 black-and-white photos, definitions stand alone. Retired Assistant Keeper of the British Museum's Egyptian Antiquities Bierbrier has revised the edition to incorporate critical new components, like an introductory chronology and an impressive, 115-page bibliography. Organized alphabetically, the entries are accessibly written and contain boldface cross-references. A still more thoroughgoing guide can be found in Oxford's Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt. Recommended, in conjunction with an illustrated reference, for Egyptology and ancient history collections.
