School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up-A book that scrutinizes Adolf Hitler and his henchmen. Stewart commences by discussing the Third Reich's historical background and moves on to examine Hitler's early life and later career as politician and racial theorist. This coverage leads into chapters that discuss life in the Reich, Hitler as dictator and military leader, and the events of the Second World War. The author does not present anything that has not been written before and gives the conventional opinion that Hilter was not solely responsible, but that ``millions of people followed him eagerly-and many others chose to stand and watch in frightened silence.'' The book's attractive format includes a large number of captioned black-and-white historical photographs, informative sidebars, and pertinent quotes. A worthy complement to Peter Neville's Life in the Third Reich (Batsford, 1992) and Albert Marrin's Hitler (Viking, 1987).-David A. Lindsey, Lakewood Junior/Senior High School, WA
