Children's Literature

Throughout history people have divided society into groups so that blame can easily be assigned when society falls into disrepair. The Jews, one of the most ancient groups of people, have long been a scapegoat for governments as well as for other social groups. Nazi Germany managed to blame the Jews for the defeat of Germany and its allies in World War I. Initially, the German government sought only to contain the Jews or deport them, but with the outbreak of war in the East against the Soviet Union, their priorities changed and they sought to exterminate the entire race of Jews throughout Europe. The Holocaust was the final plan to the "Jewish Question." Genocide has occurred throughout history, but the German approach to the extermination of the Jews was committed in a cold, industrial manner that was never seen before or since. Levy presents the complete history of the Holocaust, including incidents of Jewish persecution throughout history and the consequences that are still being felt today. Fully illustrated, the text is straightforward and easy to read, and includes a glossary, an index, and additional sources to consult. Part of the "Questioning History" series. 2004, Smart Apple Media, Ages 10 to 15.
