Overview

A true horse-lover's book with an inspirational message of caring, this volume features the horses and stories of the most important refuges—from the rugged grasslands of South Dakota where wild mustangs can run free, to an oasis in the Arizona desert for mares.
The indomitable spirit of a wild horse running free has become a symbol of America. However, many of these noble creatures are fighting for their survival. In powerful portrait and location photography and compelling stories told for the first time—further strengthened by the voice of Temple Grandin—this unprecedented work reveals the nature of wild horses, as well as their rescue and rehabilitation.

"As founder of America's only organization created specifically to support and provide resources to this country's equine welfare community, I am pleased to see the tireless and compassionate efforts of the men and women who give so much of themselves to saving, rehabbing, and re-homing or providing permanent sanctuary to these animals finally recognized.” ~Shirley Puga, National Equine Resource Network

"Not only is this book (with a foreword by Temple Grandin) filled with beautiful images of horses, but it also tells the stories of 13 horse sanctuaries across the U.S. Each has its own individual mission, but there’s a shared passion for rescuing horses. This is not your average “horse coffee table book”; this book is something special." ~Design Sponge

"In words and photographs, this necessary book pays tribute to those who take care of our equine castaways. Find out who they are, help them in your own way—and learn their stories." ~Deanne Stillman, author of Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West, a LA Times best book of the year

"Heartwarming stories and luscious photographs of animals who have been saved from cruelty and neglect to find an abundance of love and care in thirteen extraordinary equine sanctuaries across America. "I would like to compliment Karen Tweedy-Holmes and Allison Milionis on this wonderful job of presenting the work of those of us who have made it our life's work to offer refuge to America's displaced equines. We are truly honored to be included here with our colleagues around the country. We do what we do because we all believe that these special animals, who have served mankind for so long as partners and companions, have earned the right to dignity and safety throughout their lives." ~Allen Warren, Horse Harbor Foundation
