Children's Literature - Kristin Harris

The "Read and Play" series focuses on subject matter most young readers will find of interest. Photographs of horses running get the readers attention immediately. These are horses and they run fast. Each spread highlights one word in the upper left corner. That word is included in at least one of the sentences below. Each sentence is very simple with the key words bolded. Horses have big bodies and four legs. Horses feet are called hooves and its head is very big. Horses have a mane and a tail and they eat grass. Foal may be a new word for young readers. Two picture puzzles at the end of the book create an interactive experience. A teachers/parents guide provides numerous suggestions of related activities to engage the reader, such as counting the animals in the photo, asking what other animals have tails and discussing what a horses coat feels like. Other recommended activities include making a horseshoe with tin foil and playing pin the tail on the horse.
