Among the paintings of Horses Peggy Roalf selected for her fine introduction-to-art series, youngsters will discover works that adorn walls, amphoras, illuminated manuscripts, canvases and cardboard. They reflect many cultures and range in age from a 17,000-year-old cave drawing to an optical illusion painted by Magritte 30 years ago. The pages facing each colorful reproduction contain Ms. Roalf's comments on the artist's background, his time (sadly, no women's works are included), and the work itself.
