About the Author, Dr. Seuss

It s difficult to imagine the children s book landscape without Dr. Seuss, who is, almost half a century after The Cat in the Hat, the best-recognized children s book writer in the country. But until Dr. Seuss -- a.k.a. Theodor Seuss Geisel -- reinvented the genre with his colorful and exuberant Sneetches, Grinches, Zaxes, and Zooks, children s books were often little more than literal-minded lessons and cautionary tales intended to transform young readers into productive citizens.

K-Gr 4-Translating a Dr. Seuss text would daunt even the most intrepid linguist. Hats off to Canetti for doing an outstanding job with this title. First published in 1954, this classic story features a sensitive elephant that one day hears a tiny sound coming from a dust mote. He listens very hard and finally discerns a plea for help. Horton gladly undertakes the role of saving the society of minuscule creatures who have made this dust mote their home because "una persona es una persona, por muy pequena que sea/for a person is a person, no matter how small." Horton is ridiculed for speaking to a piece of fluff, chastised and ultimately threatened with incarceration. Horton must exhort his proteges to speak up as loudly as possible to prove their existence to the nonbelievers. Their existence is not validated until every single Who, even the smallest shirker, cries out. Political message aside, this is an enduring classic that has delighted children for many years. What a pleasure it is to know that this superbly translated version is now available in Spanish for a whole new audience. Dr. Seuss's delightful and inimitable illustrations show both the macro and the micro world in all of its zaniness. Recommended for all collections and bookstores.
