Children's Literature - Kim Harris Thacker

Hoping the rodent government will establish a national cheese, Miss Tuftmouse's second grade mouse class sends a letter to the "Squeaker" of the House and Senate "Mouse-jority" Leader in Washington, D.C. The letter gets the cheese ball rolling, but lawmaking is difficult, especially when disagreement upon which delicious cheese should be chosen as the national one abounds. Follow Miss Tuftmouse's class's letter and the bill that results from it through many stages of the lawmaking process until a national cheese is announced—a cheese that every patriotic rodent from "Moussouri" to "Moussisippi" will surely agree upon. Readers will enjoy searching for well-hidden images of George "Washingtail" in every illustration (each of which is inspired by actual architecture on Capitol Hill) of this rhyming book. Teachers will value the simple way in which lawmaking is explained and will appreciate the additional resources at the end of the book (including kid-friendly websites), which give further details about both the lawmaking process and the construction of our nation's Capitol building. Other books in the "Little Patriot Press" series also use mice as characters to teach important information about American government. Reviewer: Kim Harris Thacker
