Children's Literature

Author Melissa Stewart takes a very complicated subject, plant photosynthesis, and attempts to explain the basics in this five-chapter, 32-page book. In the chapter "What Plants Need to Grow," Stewart describes how plant leaves collect energy from the sun, while the roots absorb water and minerals from the soil. She also details how when insects sip nectar from flowering plants, plant pollen sticks to their bodies and is then carried to other plants which use the pollen to create fruit. Other chapters are: "Why Plants Grow," "Inside a Plant," "How Plants Make Food," and "How Do Plants Grow?" The book defines terms related to photosynthesis such as organelles, chlorophyll, and chloroplasts. Each chapter has a "Now I Know!" question to check the reader's comprehension and to add an interactive component to the book's text. The book includes a classroom activity—growing bush beans in various environments (sun or shade and with or without water, for instance) to demonstrate a plant's needs. The book is part of the "Tell Me Why, Tell Me How" series.
