Nature's Role Wine making is a collaboration between man and nature. Nature has generously provided the grape, soil, and climate as well as the key to wine making. This is nature's gift. Man has his own role to play. Selecting and cultivating the grape he then participates in its astonishing trans- formation from rich, sweet juice into the exhilarating liquid we call wine. The Grape The grape's eventful journey begins in the spring of the year. As average daily temperatures reach about 50 degrees F, the vine begins its annual growth. Tender buds form on the branches and sap rises in the vines, causing those buds to bulge and burst. This is the bud break.
