How to Use Linux shows people that Linux can be used productively, that it is a viable alternative operating system for home and office computers, and that is does have the applications and environment to support productive activities. It will show that Linux is "not just for nerds or computer geeks," and that it has a LOT to offer. The book focuses on those graphic elements and important tasks available during an X Windows session. It demonstrates how to use the default X11 window manager as well as how to perform critical actions using selected graphic X11 tools.

Bill Ball is a technical writer, editor, and magazine journalist, and has been working with computers for the past 20 years. He first started working with Linux, starting with kernel version .99, after moving from BSD4.3 Machten for the Apple Macintosh. He has also published Linux PPP network connection guides for local ISP's in Northern Virginia. He has taught desktop publishing, served as an Apple Federal Support Coordinator, and was once a bulletin board system operator. He is the author of two other highly successful Linux books: Sams Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours and Using Linux.
