Gr 4-6-From the first awesome glimpse inside an Egyptian tomb that has been sealed for centuries to the exhiliration of observing chimpanzee behavior in the wild, readers will be captivated by the adventures of the 27 archaeologists and anthropologists featured in this diverse collection. Weitzman includes profiles of Ruth Benedict, Franz Boas, Jane Goodall, Zora Neale Hurston, the Leakey family, Yigael Yadin, and other leaders in the study of human culture. His conversational style makes the book especially approachable, and his coverage of the subjects' childhood experiences, family lives, and schooling is notable. Through a generous use of quotations and anecdotes (sources are cited), he clearly conveys the personality of each figure. Many of them overcame a multitude of challenges in their early years, from poverty and child abuse to difficulties with formal education. Still, the emphasis here is on the positive aspects of their lives, stressing their enthusiasm for knowledge of human history and dedication to preserving cultures. Students will need to look elsewhere for complete information on events marking their adult lives. Black-and-white photographs and illustrations enhance each biography.
