Children's Literature

This straightforward text gives an overview of what human rights mean and how they are threatened in various industries and governments. Chapters are clearly organized into topics on government violations of human rights, workers' rights (including sections on sweatshops, factory conditions, and unions), and women's rights (with an explanation of female genital mutilation and why it continues). Interestingly, the rights of the child are not specifically addressed in this book, which seems a serious omission when discussing workers' conditions. Overall, the information and clear writing offer readers a deeper understanding of human rights. The book includes the full text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that was written in 1948, a thorough index, and informative subheads. 2003, Lucent Books. Ages 12 up.
