Children's Literature - Children's Literature

This is an extraordinary reference work with over one hundred and twenty-five biographies of international civil rights and labor activists, antislavery reformers, women suffragists, human rights advocates, Nobel Peace Prize winners, and philanthropists. From such well-known names as Rosa Parks and Jimmy Carter, to other important people such as Native American physician and reformer Susan Picotte LaFlesche, Mexican labor activist Cesar Chavez and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, the work of many superbly compassionate and committed people are examined in great detail. Special features include timelines, a 25-page glossary and a painstaking index, pull quotes, and actual primary source documents, which are fascinating. These include the the Anti-Slavery Declaration of 1833 and the Seneca Falls Declaration of 1848 which listing the many discriminations existing against women and was an outcome of the first modern woman's rights convention. There is a bibliography of books, articles, and web sites about the people in the volume. All in all, an exciting, modern and absorbing reference book for any school or private library. 1999, Macmillan Library Reference, Ages 10 up, $104.25. Reviewer: Nancy Partridge
