There are books about whales, then there are books about whales—and this is a great book about humpback whales! Part of the "Creatures of the Seas" series, the introduction to the book puts the humpback's fate right into humankind's hands, pointing out that although humpbacks were hunted throughout history, it was the inventions such as the steam engine—making whaling boats faster—and the explosive harpoons that made whaling more efficient. It is gems of information like those that make these nonfiction books such a great read. Kirschmann explains how the humpback got its name: when a humpback prepares to dive, it arches its back, putting its dorsal fin into a humped position. The book includes fascinating detail about this mammal's feeding behaviors, yearly migrations, mating rituals and, best of all, what makes this giant standout from other ocean travelers—its songs. The author includes a clear and colorful migration map, photo illustrations, a glossary, a bibliography, an index and list of Web sites. If you can only afford one book about humpback whales for young readers' personal, classroom or school libraries, buy this one. 2003, KidHaven Press,— Judy Crowder
