Synopsis

This classic original printed in 1923, tells the tale of the author and his friends who took up hunting deer with the bow and arrow in the late teen's and went on to harvest Cougar, Black Bear, Dall Sheep, Moose, Grizzly Bear, and Kodiak Bear with their basic handmade wooden bows and arrows. Dr. Pope informs you how to make your own tackle too. This treatise directly and indirectly inspired the thousands and now millions of sportsmen to take up hunting with the bow and arrow. It is regarded as the bible of modern bowhunting. This edition is the first paperback of this title in 27 years. This important title has not been available in any form for 8 years.

About the Author: Dr. Saxton Pope became the personal physician for ISHI, the last primitive native American in 1911 when the Ishi was brought to live on the campus of The University of California. There, they became good friends and Dr. Pope learned to enjoy Ishi's many outdoor talents. Soon, the well seasoned archer and bow maker Will "Chief" Compton met Dr. Pope and later, Arthur Young arrived. Mr. Compton taught Pope and Young how to make and use archery equipment. This mixture of sportsmen and talent inspired the able writings of Saxton Pope, thus spawning the birth of recreational bowhunting. Pope and Young traveled to distant lands as far as Africa to take Lions with their sticks and strings. Both men wrote many articles in the sporting magazines of their time and Saxton Pope wrote 5 books, The Medical History of Ishi, Yahi Archery, A Study of Bows and Arrows, Hunting with the Bow & Arrow, and Adventurous Bowmen. He is truly the father of modern recreational bowhunting.
